In November 2024, Grimmway Farms initiated a voluntary recall of select organic whole and baby carrots due to potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli). The recall affected multiple brands and bag sizes distributed nationwide in the United States and Puerto Rico. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 39 illnesses, 15 hospitalizations, and one death linked to this outbreak.
The recall's scope grew over time as more information became available, suggesting that the initial investigation did not fully capture the extent of the contamination. While the recall was eventually expanded to include additional product lines and bag sizes, the initial communication may not have reached all stakeholders in a timely manner, potentially prolonging public exposure to contaminated products.
However, one Recall InfoLink client used the platform to notify 61,520 consumers, providing them with speedy and direct information, helping to mitigate risks by ensuring affected individuals received accurate details and clear guidance. Roger Hancock, President and CEO of Recall InfoLink, emphasized the significance of their response: "Quick and accurate communication is vital during a recall to protect public health. Utilizing tools like ours to disseminate information means that consumers are informed and can take necessary actions to stay safe."
